UOI: Today we started our new UOI unit on manners and safety. First we brainstormed with our partner what we knew about manners and safety. Next we created a KWl chart about what they "knew, wanted to learn and learned at the end of the unit". Next we used manners and safety books to determine what they wanted to learn more about and filled it in on the chart.

Since we were going to talk about manners, we played cooperation games and learned to work together as a group. First we played Dr. Tangle. They stood in a group and each person grabbed hands with a person across from them and they had to work together! They learned that when they were communicators and thinkers, they could solve the problem!

Next we played a game of directions. The class was split into two teams. One person from each team closed their eyes and had to listen to the directions of the group in order to figure out where the chair was and how to sit in it. First each group was yelling and it was hard to hear. They werent COOPERATING! So they told me that it would be better if one or two people were talking instead. They improved their communication skills and got their person to right chair! We had lots of fun!

Math: Next we continued to talk about addition strategies. These are used to help their mental math skills. First I gave them a problem and they had to determine what the answer was with a partner. Next they told me how they solved the problem. We figured out that we could "make ten". In order to solve the problem 8+4, they said that 8+2=10+2=12  Next I gave them another problem and said they had to find a new way to solve the problem. In order to solve the problem 4+5 they said we could add 4+4=8+1=9. This was called adding doubles. Next we completed work in the textbook and took up the answers together.

Language/UOI: Today we did the OWA pre assessment. They had to write a narrative about the day they became invisible. This is not the final grade for the OWA but merely to help me determine what they know already about a narrative. They were very creative! When they were finished they completed a comma worksheet in their writing notebooks.
