Star of the week

This week our Star of the Week is Jordan Lewis! Great work Jordan!

Friday September 29th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did on Friday.

Math: Today we continued to practice place value by playing place value games! We played with task cards around the room, answered mysteries and used place value accordions! They had a lot of fun!

Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for more information.
Language: As the international day information was due today they had some time to work on their topic. Please make sure that all information is brought in on Monday.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
UOI: Today we worked on our PSA planning. Everyone worked together to finish their planning and write their script. We are all working on being better communicators as we have a tendency to argue when we don't agree. However, with some help, we are starting to see how communicating differently can be more productive.

Lunch/Recess

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Have a good weekend!

Thursday September 28th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did on Thursday.

Math: Today we started working on place value to 1000. They did so well on this! We started on the carpet and used buttons to represent the amounts that go in each column on the place value mat. We did some examples together. Next they went back to their desk and they did some examples on a whiteboard with a partner. Then they did some textbook questions.

Language: They worked on their international day research on the tablets. They are slowly learning how to research and I encourage everyone to practice at home so they can improve their skills. You should help them but try and let them be as independent as possible.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr.B's blog for more information.

UOI: Today we talked about personal service announcements (PSA's). I showed them several examples and talked about what they are and what the overall goal is. They learned that they are a short videos that deal with issues around the world. They also try to convince the viewer to take action. They are going to write and film their own PSA! Their's is on healthy eating. Today we started planning.

Lunch/Recess

Orange shirt day: Today we talked about orange shirt day and why we celebrate it. We watched a video on it and they asked questions about what residential schools were like. Next we made our own orange shirts. Take a look around the school!

Have a good night!

Wednesday September 27th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we started our new unit on whole numbers! We talked about place value to 100 today. We talked about three types of numbers: standard form (regular numbers), base ten name (The number of blocks used using base ten blocks. Example below) and expanded form (The amounts added up. Example below). We did several examples together in which we started with one of these types of numbers and had to find a different number ( E.g. Find the standard form when given the expanded form) Next we did some textbook questions. They did really well! I gave some of them a chart in which they can separate the numbers into (Just like the example on the top of the worksheet) and it helped. This could be a good resource for home. Here are some examples.

Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for more information.
Language: We worked on our OWA post assessment.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
Language: We continued to work on our OWA
UOI: Today we talked about how the media not only sells us products and services but often sell a lifestyle along with it. We analyzed several ads together with Ms. Chiappetta's class and found that a lot of ad's had negative messages that do not make sense with the product. They are learning to be critical about ads and not take them at face value. Good work everyone!

Lunch/Recess

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.
Mental Math: We had some time at the end of the day so we played Albert's insomnia again. We managed to stop at 25 again! Lets try and beat our score next time! Here is a video of them playing.

Have a good night!

Tuesday September 26th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: We started off with a math pre-test. They all tried very hard and I am very proud! After they finished they practiced their mental math addition, subtraction, multiplication and division! I was impressed how excellent they were and were having lots of fun. Flashcards are a great way for a child to practice their mental math alone as it allows them to check their answers. You can find some at the dollar store sometimes! Keep up the good work everyone!

Language: Today we practiced again writing a persuasive speech and they are really starting to understand how to write a persuasive speech. Today they were given a persuasive speech outline and they had to add in the transition words to their speech. If they did not finish it in class it is homework.

Lunch/Recess

UOI: Today we talked about the influence of the media. We took a look at a video that spoke about what it meant to say phrases such as "You throw like a girl" and how phrases like that influence girls and what they think about themselves. We also spoke about what it means when people and the media say phrases such as "act like a man". They told me that all people are different and it is not nice for the media to say things like that. The important take home message from today was to be critical of the media and not believe everything that they say.

Terry Fox Run: Here is a video of the song they learned today in French about Terry Fox! There is also a video of them running!

UOI: When we came back they made positivity posters that are going to be out in the hallway. We made a list of things we could write together and they did amazing! These are suppose to make people feel better instead of seeing negative media messages. Great work everyone!

Uniforms

We would like to send a friendly reminder to all parent(s)/guardian(s) to please label your child(ren)'s uniform pieces to help us retrieve items in a more efficient manner and to reduce the number of lost uniform pieces. All unidentified uniform pieces have been place in our lost and found box located outside of the gymnasium area, and all identified pieces have been returned to the appropriate students.

We are also kindly asking all parent(s)/guardian(s) to please check your child's uniform labels to ensure that your child has not accidentally taken home someone else's uniform piece. If this is the case, please return the uniform piece to you child's homeroom teacher.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Star of the Week

In my class each week I choose someone who stood out to me as a student. This week our star of the week was.....

Keep up the good work John!

Friday September 22nd 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Our schedule has changed slightly as we now have french at the end of the day.

Paper Handout: We started the day off learning how to use a binder and organizing our work we have done thus far.
Math: We did review for our test on Monday. We went over the pattern in which the number you increase by increases each time. There are three parts to this pattern: 1. The start number 2. the first amount you add 3. the number you increase by each time. We also did this type of question in a chart form. Here is an example.

The test is on Monday and will be exactly like the review. If they practice from the test they will be fine. They have all brought home their textbook and workbook in order to gain more practice or answer questions if needed. The textbook is an excellent source for more questions or can clear up a confusion. If you have any other problems please let me know.
Language: Today we continued to practice persuasive speeches. We brainstormed both sides of the argument for "Should we have homework?" The kids did their OREO outline together. They are really starting to get it now. Next time they should try to add even more detail.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information
Language: We finished off our OREO planners.
UOI: Today we used the information we learned yesterday to analyze our an advertisement independently. This is going to be marked and they were told yesterday. The ad had so many of our techniques it was fabulous. The ad we used was:

Orange Shirt Day

Orange shirt day is on September 29th.  It is held annually on Sept. 30 but with this being Saturday we have it scheduled for the day before.

Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013.  It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.

The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year.  It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.

Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.  (www.orangeshirtday.org )

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.
Morning Meeting
Agendas
Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for more information.
Language/UOI: Today we continued to talk about persuasive speeches. As we were having some trouble yesterday, we did an activity where the students had a persuasive speech outline and they had to put the sheets in order and match the reasons to the evidence. I think they are starting to get it so we moved onto our outline from yesterday in order to fix our mistakes and complete the outline.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.

Math: Today we started talking about ordinal numbers. An ordinal number is place of the number. For example, 1st, 2nd and 3rd etc. We did several examples together involving them standing in a line and determining which place they were in. I also lined up their water bottles in order to determine which line they were in. We did several examples from the textbook involving which spot several letters in the alphabet are in. They did really well. We did some worksheets.

Lunch/Recess

UOI: Today we started talking about analyzing advertisements. We analyzed two print advertisements and one digital advertisement. We asked ourselves several questions in order to break down an ad:

What is the product being advertised
Who is responsible for the advertisement
Who is the target audience?
What is the advertisement making people want?
What are the advertising techniques have been used?

We talk about this in order to understand the impact of the media on people and their sense of selfs. They are starting to understand how tricky companies can be with their advertisements!

Have a good night!

Wednesday 20 September 2017

Wednesday Septemner 20th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.
Morning meeting
Agendas
UOI: Today we continued to work on our advertisements from yesterday. They did really well! Everyone finished and did fantastic! Take a look outside our classroom tomorrow to see what they look like!

They were working so well this morning! Take a look!

Math: We went over some homework to correct our mistakes.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. Beresford's blog for more information.

We are having a hard time listening and following instructions during gym time. We had to have a very serious chat about how we behave in gym today. I am hoping tomorrow is better.

Math: Today we continued to practice equations involving subtraction. We did some questions on the board and the students tried to figure them out together. They are understanding this concept well! Here are the steps that I gave them to complete their homework tonight.

The hundreds chart helps a lot. Please use them if you are having trouble. Please hand this sheet in tomorrow so we can use the hundreds chart again.

Steps to filling in a blank in a subtraction question:
1.    What are the answers to each side? Write them down underneath
2.    Remember our rules of thumb
a.    If you have a little number and the answer you ADD!
b.    If you have a big number and the answer you SUBTRACT!
3.    Rearrange the question if you have to on the side of your page
4.    Rewrite the equation with the final answer

Example:
13 -  ______= 15 – 7
                        8
13-8=5
13-5=15-7
If you are trying to figure out two questions are equal:

1.    What are the answers to each side? Write them down underneath
2.    Are they equal? If they are not write “They are not equal”
3.    What number should you make it equal to? Decide which side.
4.    Determine what the equation needs to be in order to make it equal
a.    One side needs to stay the same
b.    The other side cannot change completely, change on number in order to make the equation equal
c.     If they are having trouble, rewrite the question using our rules of thumb

 13 - 5   and 15 – 4
                         8                  11
They are not equal.
                      15-8=7
  13 -  5 = 15 – 7

Remember to ALWAYS rewrite the final answer in an equation!!

 Lunch/Recess

Language: Today we continued to talk about persuasive speeches. We reviewed the concept by creating an outline together. I suggested we write about how we would convince our parents for a later bedtime. Instead, they wanted to write about why my bedtime should be earlier! I was amazed!  They did well doing this. Next I introduced the topic they were going to do on their own persuasive speech outline. We brainstormed some ideas together. Next they started working on their own persuasive speech outline. Some people did fine on this. However, some people are having a hard time understanding that the example needs to back up the reason. We are going to work on this tomorrow.

Have a good night!
