Hello,

Here is what we did today.

I was running the christmas concert performances all day so the kids were together with Miss. Glover's class being taught by Miss. Bannon.

UOI: They began with a friction science experiment where the students were required to build different ramps using different materials to test the friction by rolling toy cars down the ramps! They used felt, tin foil, and bubble wrap! It turns out that bubble wrap has the most friction!

Math: Today they reviewed calendar and completed a worksheet.

Crafts: They spent the afternoon making a christmas craft to take home! They loved it!

Have a good night!

Star of the Week

Last week's star of the week was Manny! Great work Manny!

Friday December 16th 2016

Hello,

Here is what we did on Friday.

Math: Today we reviewed the calendar and how we how to tell time in relation to a schedule. They need to remember to not count the first day when counting on a calendar. The activity they did was a schedule in which they had to order the subjects according to the time of the day. Next they had to put write the subjects in order and then write the time digitally and in analog.

UOI: Today we talked about friction and seeing that everything has little bumps that we cannot see which help increase or decrease friction. They had a worksheet in which they had to put the sheet on a surface and colour on it in order to see the different bumps. They were so interested to see that everything had bumps even the things that seemed smooth!

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Christmas Concert: We continued to practice our skit. Almost there! Only a few more days!

Dance Party: They worked so hard practicing we had dance party:)

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Lunch/Recess

UOI: Today we made balloon rockets! In order to make a balloon rocket you thread a straw through a piece of string and tape the string to two surfaces. Next you tape a balloon to the straw. Blow up the balloon and let it go! We started in the classroom and were in pairs making the balloon rockets. However we were having some trouble understanding the results. As a result we decided to be inquirers and figure out what we going on! We paired up with Ms. Glover's class and made a giant balloon rocket in the hallway! We figured out that part of the reason that we were confused was because the balloon, when filled up with a lot of air, needed to be stabilized. One of the students suggested that we attach another string and straw to the bottom of the balloon. It worked so well! We continued to try different things in order to see the results. We finally figured out that when there is a lot of mass, the balloon travels farther but not fastest because more force is required. When there is less mass the balloon goes faster but not as far because less force is required to move the balloon but not enough is present in order to move it really far. They loved the lesson and understood it better!

Here is a video of what happened with less mass vs a more mass:

Action Stars

We had some action stars so far in this unit!

Vanshi brought in an encyclopedia about forces and motion!

Avaneesh brought in a video about forces and motion!

Munira brought in a straw to show an example of push and pull!

Tuesday December 13th 2016

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Classroom: First we did some classroom organization and put away some work.
UOI: We watched a few short videos on our forces and motion unit!
Language: Today we talked about inferencing. First we did some inferencing questions together in which they had the chance to work out some inferencing situations with a partner and myself. Next they completed a worksheet and finally they wrote some of their own inferencing questions.
French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Lunch/Recess

Math: Today we started working on time! It was a very hard lesson but they did SO well! I was so proud of them. First we started with a matching game where they had a few pictures of a analog clock and they had to find the digital match somewhere on a table. Next we did some questions on the board together. We talked about quarter after, half past, quarter to and O'clock. We also talked about other ways of naming other times such as: 10 to 6, 25 after 5 or 20 to 7. It was tricky but after we worked together they did really well. I gave them an extra sheet to complete for extra practice.

This is the wheel I sent home to help them complete the homework.

Wake up! After they worked so hard we had a dance party:)

UOI: Today we talked about direction and speed! They used the tablets to complete a scavenger hunt with a partner and they had a lot of fun! We learned that forces and change speed, shape and direction. They all did really well.

Lunch/Recess

UOI: We continued working on the tablets ad exploring different parts of the website: http://www.dkfindout.com/us/science/forces-and-motion/

Eva presented her pioneer project as she was away when we did it originally. Good work Eva!

Gym: Please see Mr. H's blog for more information.

Have a good night!

Christmas Concert

Monday December 12th 2016

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Spelling: Spelling is due Thursday and the test is on Friday.
Christmas Concert: We finished our actions today!
French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Lunch/Recess

UOI: Today we talked about balanced and unbalanced forces. Forces are balanced when there is the same amount of weight pushing and pulling at the same time. When there is more push than pull, or vise versa, then they become unbalanced. When the forces are unbalanced there is movement. When there they are balanced there is no movement. We started off by using the pan balances  and finding out which items were the heaviest and which were the lightest and ranking them from 1-5. Next They used the balances to determine how many blocks equalled certain amount of weight in grams. They had so much fun!

Math: Today we talked about calendars. We looked at counting days/week before and after a certain date. Next we figured out how many months children from by converting years to months. We also talked about how many weeks, months and days in a year as well as in a leap year! They were very interested in it! Finally we did some work in the textbook.

Lunch/Recess

Music: Please see Mr. Andrei's blog for more information.
