Tuesday January 30th 2018

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we started by reviewing temperature and doing a worksheet independently. We took it up and then moved onto money! They knew a lot about money and we went over all of the coins and bills, how much they were worth and what picture or colour they were. They remembered a lot! Next we went over how many coins/bills were equal to a different coin/bill. For example how many dimes were in $1, how much nickels were in $1 or how many quarters were in $5. We did some questions from the textbook and then took them up.

Daily Language review
Language: Some people finished off their speeches/summatives and most started practicing while  we did some last minute 1:1 editing with myself.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
Organizing: We did some organizing in our classroom and handed out some papers
UOI: We continued to practice our speeches. We have talked about the actions and the way they need to talk in their speech. It should be dramatic and over the top but not too silly.

Lunch/Recess

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Have a good night!

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we talked about temperature. They remembered a lot from last year's science fair experiment. First we talked about how we measure temperature in celsius in Canada and in Fahrenheit in the States using a thermometer. Next we looked at some examples of thermometers and they read them together. Next we went around the room and read different thermometers in a scavenger hunt and then took them up. They did very well!

We had some extra time so we played Albert's Insomnia!

Friday January 26th 2018

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we took another approach to elapsed time and broke it down. We talked about elapsed time is the amount of times between two times. We talked about how first we always do the hours then the minutes. We talked about how when we are adding the hours the minutes never change. When we are adding tens, the tens column changes and the ones do not.We did many examples together and then they did some examples with their partners. Here are some pictures of the way we did it which I think will explain it better than I can in words.

If you would like more practice here are some worksheets for time

Daily Language review: We did a day that we missed this week.
Spelling test: Spelling tests have been handed back and should be signed for Monday.
Lunch/Recess
Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
UOI: We worked on our summative projects and most people finished! I have sent home the stories so they can practice for the speeches. They have not been edited yet so prepare for changes but they can start making progress on memorizing. Good luch!

Thursday 25 January 2018

Thursday January 25th 2018

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we focused on elapsed time! We took up some of our math work so we can understand our mistakes. Next We started off with two separate times on a clock on the board, one in purple representing the start time and one in red representing the end time. We counted up in five minutes until the end time. This was less than 1 hour. Next we counted up in several hours with the minutes the same. Next we added in sets of 5 minutes to our hours and finally we added odd minutes.

The overall concept was to first figure out the hours, then the minutes. If the minutes were odd ( for example 37 to 43 minutes) they could first figure out how many minutes until 40 and then 40 to 43. Some people found it helpful to write down the sets of 5 minutes on the board.

This is a hard concept and it is going to be tricky. We are going to spend tomorrow's lesson as wellso try your best!
Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for more information
Daily language review
Language: Today we started working on our rough draft of our summative. Some people are still working on their story mountains and some people started working on the problem of their story.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
UOI: We continued working on our rough draft and a lot of people were able to finish. They are on track! Keep working hard!

Wednesday 24 January 2018

Wednesday January 24th 2018

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we continue to talk about time! We reviewed some times and then spent some time talking about how we tell time through how long is until the next hour. We talked about how after 6 on the clock, half past, we talk about how much time is until the next hour. We do this by subtracting from 60. For example, 7 represents 35 so we subtract 35 from 60 and we get 25. So it is 25 to the next hour. We did some practicing with this concept on a whiteboard clock and did some textbook questions

Daily language review
Language: We started working on our UOI writing summatives. We used the book they brought in recently and kept the original intro and build up and then we are changing the problem and solution. More information has been sent home today in the agenda.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
UOI: Today we talked about fables. We talked about how a fable is a short story with a moral. Next I gave them fable and were open minded and communicators and working in groups to act out a fable! Here are the presentations that we have finished so far.

Tuesday 23 January 2018

Tuesday January 23rd 2018

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: We took up last nights math homework and then started learning how to tell time. So we started making our own clocks! We are missing a part of our clocks so we will finish making them tomorrow.

Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for more information
Language: Today we talked about mystery stories! We learned about the features of a mystery including: a clue, the witness, the culprit and the red herring! Next we solved a mystery at St. Jude's! Someone has stolen Mr. B!!! They had to go around the school in order to determine who the suspects were, what their alibi was and the clue they gave. They had so much fun!

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information
UOI: They finished off their mystery packages! Unfortunately some people were being very silly and spent their time running around the hallways instead of doing their work and they were unable to finish within the allotted time. When they came back we went through the clues and found out that Ms. Jasolka was the culprit!! They had so much fun.
Math: We spent more time talking about clocks and how to tell time. We learned that the hour hand is the small one and the big hand is the minute hand. Next we learned how to know which hour it is. We learned that sometimes the hour hand is not always going to point to directly to the hour so we have to figure out which two hours it is in between. We also talked about time terminology and how we use fractions on a clock. When the minute hand is pointed at the 3 that is quarter past means it is a quarter way through the clock. When the minute hand is pointed at the 6 is is half way through the clock which means it is half past the hour. FInally when the minute hand is pointed at the 9 it is the quarter to THE NEXT HOUR. For example, quarter to 9 is not quite in the hour of 9. So we go to the hour before and that is 8. I know that the minute hand is pointing to the 9 for quarter to so that means it is 8:45. We did several examples together using my miniature clocks and they seem to be doing well.  Finally we did some work in the textbook.

TIP!! If they are having trouble seeing which line the minute or hour hand is pointing to try using a straight edge.

Lunch/Recess

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.
Math: We took up the work we did from the textbook.

Monday 22 January 2018

Monday January 22nd 2018

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we worked on comparing units of time. I split the class into two groups and gave each person a sheet of paper which had a unit of time on it. They had to figure out the order of the papers without talking to everyone else. They did really well and figured out where they made mistakes along the way. They were open minded and excellent communicators. Great work!

Spelling: Spelling is due Thursday and the test is on Friday.
Daily Language Review
Language: Today we talked about scary stories. We looked at pictures of a fire and a scary forest and came up with sentences to describe the settings. We talked about using our 5 senses and showing and not telling. The students had to write 6-8 sentences on a scary setting of their choice.

Here is an example of some of the sentences we came up with for the forest:

·      The bright yellow sun shone on the dark gloomy forest.
·      He was horrified as he entered the dark and spooky forest.
·      The grey, dark fog covered the trees as I banged my head.
·      Water dripping from the tree branches into dark muddy puddles.
·      As I walked through the dark, creepy forest the branches creaked in the distance.
·      Crows chirping in the distance.
·      The dark scary forest surrounded me as I was all-alone.
·      The twisty branches poked at me as I travelled through the long, dark path.
·      As I stepped through the creepy forest I heard leaves crackling under my feet.
·      As I was walking through the dark, creepy forest I felt like I was walking through a         graveyard.
·      It was as dark as space.
·      The branches snapped and cracked as I walked through the forest.
  Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
UOI: We continued to work on our scary story paragraphs. Next we used our paragraphs to great a picture of our setting. They needed to only draw what was written in their paragraph. The objective of the activity was to get them to understand that they need to provide a holistic understanding of a setting rather than solely feelings or only physical features. They did really well and came up with some very scary stories!! I was so impressed!

Summative: Each student was asked to bring in a picture book for Monday. No chapter books or books with very few words. The book must have 3-5 sentences per page, a clear introduction and build up. It is very important that a picture book is brought in for Monday as we need it for an activity that week.
