Here is what we did today.
Math: Today we talked about mass! We learned that mass is how heavy an object is and can be measured in grams or kilograms. We learned that 1000 g= 1 kg. We passed around different weights so they can have an idea of what it feels like. We talked about how a paper clip is worth 1 gram and a textbook is about 1 kg. They are to use this to help them determine how heavy something is and what it would be measured in. Next we played a game in which they had to stand up if they thought it was measured in grams and sit down if they thought it was measured in kilograms. They loved it!
Next we used the pan balances and compared the weight of different objects against each other and against different weights. We finished off with some textbook questions.
Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for more information
Daily language review
Language: We talked about how we describe characters. I noticed that we have had a hard time describing characters in our DRA. So we listened to the first few pages of a book on raz kids and we talked about how we describe the characters. I told them that they need to be specific with what the book told them and make inferences based on what happens. They should aim for 2 or more pieces of specific information for each character they describe.
Next we talked about making predictions. If they are making three predictions the first should be about something that could happen in the beginning, the second a problem that could happen and the third is a solution that could happen. All of the predictions should be based on information from the story and given in their predictions.
Here is what we predicted (The story was about leprechauns and little fairies. They called the fairies "little people")
Beginning: 1. I know that grandpa was talking about "little people" so I think that Colleen is going to meet the "little people" at the farm
Problem: 2. I know that grandpa told colleen that they were magical so I think the "little people" are going to cast a spell on Colleen
Solution: 3. I know that she is visiting her grandparents so i think that her grandpa is going to save her from the spell

UOI: Today we talked about physical landforms. First we watched a video to help us understand landforms: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYUzvMFvnps
Next I showed them some pictures from my trip to Scotland which had some great pictures of different landforms!

Volcano
Next they did a matching game with their partners in which they had to match the definition to the picture of the landform. We finished off the period with a definition worksheet. They did great!

Re-registration deadline- Monday February 12, 2008 at 4:00pm
A message from the Admissions Coordinator…
Hello SJA Parents and Guardians,
This is just a friendly reminder that our deadline for re-registration is just days away! Currently, we have a number of families on waitlists wanting to secure any vacancies that may be available to them once this deadline has passed. Therefore, in order to ensure that your child has a secured placement for the upcoming academic year (2018-2019), we kindly ask that if you have not already done so, to please complete and return your child’s registration package to their homeroom teacher as soon as possible.
Thank you for your continued support with St. Jude’s Academy.
Best regards,
Helen Markovic
