Wednesday October 4th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we continued working on rounding. We extended our learning by talking about rounding to the nearest 1000. We did a lot of work together on the board and then started working on the worksheet. They seem to understand it. They need to make sure to follow the steps that we have been following. Here are the steps:

Rounding to the nearest 10
1)         Look at the ones column—Are we rounding up or down? Look at the rounding rollercoaster for help.
271

We are rounding down.

2         2)  Look at the tens column—What are we rounding to?
·     If we are rounding up the tens column is going to go up by one
              276 è 280
·     If we are rounding down the tens is going to stay the same
                             271 è 270

When rounding numbers in the thousands to the nearest ten, cover up the thousands and hundreds—Those numbers are going to stay the same.

2781--- You can cover up the 2 and the 7

Rounding to the nearest 100
1)  Look at the tens column—Are we rounding up or down? Look at the rounding rollercoaster.
271------ We are rounding up.
2             2)  Look at the hundreds column—What are we rounding to?
·     If we are rounding up the hundreds column is going to go up by one
 278 è300
·     If we are rounding down the hundreds is going to stay the same
221 è200

When rounding numbers in the thousands to the nearest hundred, cover up the thousands—Those numbers are going to stay the same

2781è2800

Rounding to the nearest 1000

2971------ We are rounding up.
4            2)  Look at the thousands column—What are we rounding to?
·     If we are rounding up the thousands column is going to go up by one
 2798 è3000
·     If we are rounding down the thousands is going to stay the same
2221 è2000

This sheet will help if they are having a hard time remembering which ten is closest.

This will help remember the rules of whether to go up or down.

Here are some extra sheets if you want some extra practice.
