Here is what we did on Thursday.
Math: Today we talked about greater than and less than symbols. We did learned that the open end of the symbol always faces the bigger number; the alligator always wants to eat the bigger number because its more meat! We practiced many questions that made us decide which symbol to use. Then we practiced word problems, the students were instructed to use place value charts to help them figure out which number was bigger.
Ex: Kareena has has 5143 plaid shirts and Alyssa has 7852 plaid shirts. Who has more?
First step: make a place value chart and place the numbers inside.

Look at the thousands column first, which number is the bigger? If the numbers are the same then you have to look towards the next column to determine your next step.Continue until you can see which is bigger?
The next step is to write it out:
5143 < 7852
OR
7852> 5143
Alyssa has more plaid shirts than Kareena.
