Here is what we did today.
Math: Today we talked about rounding. We started with rounding to the nearest ten. Rounding has two main golden rules:
4 or lower round down
5 or higher round up
Nearest ten
This applies for all types of rounding. Here is a picture of the anchor chart we have been using. When rounding to the nearest ten you first look at the ones column. Decide if we are rounding up or down? Look at the rounding rollercoaster for help. Next look at the tens column. What are we rounding to?
a.
If we are rounding up the tens column is going to go
up by one
b.
If we are rounding down the tens is going to stay the
same
271 is rounded to 270
While learning this we did a game. We jumped up if we rounded up and went down to the ground if we rounded down. After each question we talked about what it rounds to and why. They seemed to like it!
When rounding numbers in the thousands
to the nearest ten, cover up the thousands and hundreds—Those numbers
are going to stay the same.
2781--- You can cover up the 2 and the 7
When rounding to the nearest hundred the steps are the same however you look at the tens column to tell us if we are rounding up or down and the hundreds column to know which number to round to.
When rounding numbers in the thousands
to the nearest hundred, cover up the thousands—Those numbers are going to
stay the same
2781--- You can cover up the 2
2781 is rounded to 2800
We also played the jumping game to illustrate this concept.
