Tuesday September 19th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.
Morning Meeting
Math Review: We did a quick worksheet to review some concepts we have learned so far.
Music: Please see Mr.Oliver's blog for more information.
UOI: Today we started working on our own advertisements. We created a company, named it as well as made a logo and a slogan. Tomorrow we will work on the good copy.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
Math: Today we reviewed the homework to go through questions that we don't understand. Next we started working on equations involving subtraction. We had two general rules of thumb.

Rule of thumb:
If you have a little number and the answer you ADD!
___- 2 =15
15+2 =17
SO
17-2=15

If you have a big number and the answer you SUBTRACT!
17- _____=15
17-15=2
SO

17-2=15

When dealing with a question asks "Are these sums equal". First figure out what the answer to both questions are. Next we have to determine if they are equal. Next decide which one you are going to make it equal to. Then determine how to make it equal using the rules of thumb.

Example:
               13 - 5   and 15 – 4
                   8                  11
They are not equal.
  13 -  5 = 15 – 7

If you need to rewrite the question to see both sides that is okay too. So you know that you have to make the answers to equal 8 so you can write the question again to make it easier.

15- _______= 8

You know that you have the big number and the answer so you subtract.

15-8=7

Please make sure they are following these examples properly as it will help them understand properly.

Lunch/Recess

Language/UOI: We continued to talk about persuasive speeches! Today we reviewed the concept of OREO (Opinion, reason, evidence and opinion) and wrote out one together based on "Should we have longer recess?". Tomorrow they will be doing an persuasive speech planner on their own.

Have a good night!

Monday September 18th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Presentation: We started the day off with a presentation with War Amps learning about amputation as one of our children is a child amputee. The kids found it very interesting!

UOI: Today we first reviewed the different advertising techniques we spoke about on Friday. Next I showed them some videos using some of the ad techniques and talked about how they fit with the different techniques. Next we talked about different colours and what they represent. Finally we used our company "Field Fun" that we created before to create an advertisement! This is practice for tomorrow when they have to do it themselves. The success criteria is:

  1. 2-3 ad techniques (no more than 4)
  2. Purpose of the ad is stated
  3. Company name
  4. Logo
  5. Slogan

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. Beresford's blog for more information.
Math: Today we continued to talk about equations involving addition. We talked about what an equation is and they told me that an equation is where both sides of the problem are equal and include a equal sign. Next we did some examples together involving two math problems on either side. It is important that children are showing their work underneath the question. For example: 5+2 =3 +____
The first step is to figure out what 5+2 and write it underneath the question. Now we can figure out "3 + what equals 7". If they do not know what the answer is through mental math, they can count up. Also, if the numbers are too big to do it using column addition on the side of the page.

Lunch/Recess

Spelling: Spelling is due Thursday and the test is on Friday.
Language: Today we started talking about persuasive speeches. The acronyms to remember the structure for a persuasive speech is OREO. Opinion, reason, evidence and opinion. The reason and evidence are repeated three times for three reasons (opinion 1. reason, evidence 2. reason, evidence 3. reason, evidence and restate the opinion). Next we went through a persuasive speech and found the different parts of the OREO structure together.

Have a good night

Friday September 15th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did on Friday.

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.
Morning meeting/Spelling test: Tests have been handed back and should be signed and returned for Monday
Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for more information
Language: We did our OWA pre-assessment on a persuasive speech.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
Math: Today we talked about equations involving addition. First we talked about an equation means a math question. The basic understanding of this lesson is filling in missing numbers to equations. We did some questions together in which they had to determine if two equations were equal and came to the same answer. We also talked about answering questions when one number is missing but you have the answer. We counted up using the numbers we have. We also talked about using three numbers to create an equation.

Overall it was a really good lesson!

Lunch/Recess

UOI: Today we talked about advertising techniques and the various ways that advertisers use them. We talked about :

1) Putting down the competitor
2) bandwagon
3) Aliteration
4) Repetition
5)Group of three
6) Rhetorical question
7) Hyperbole
8) Sense of Urgency
9) Logos

We talked about different examples together and then did a matching activity in which they had to match the type of technique with the example.

Have a good night!

Here is what we did today.

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information
UOI: Today we talked about ethos pathos and logos and how they are used in advertising. Ethos relates to people we trust such as celebrities, doctors or dentists. Pathos appeals to the emotions such as sadness, stress or anger. Finally logos appeals to peoples logic by providing facts and information. I gave them several ads and we categorized them. Next we watched some commercials and analyzed the videos them for which category they belonged in. We finished the period with a cut and paste activity dealing with Ethos, pathos and logos.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information. It is updated once a week.
Math:

We learned three types of patterns today:

1.     1. Repeating pattern: Repeats over and over again

2.     2. Growing pattern: Gets bigger each time

3.   3.  Shrinking pattern: Gets smaller each time

The first step is to label the term. Each number or picture is a place in the pattern and is called a term.  Next you find the difference between the numbers and continue until you see the pattern. Next you can find the pattern rule. The students always start a pattern rule with “Start at”. The next step is whether you are adding or subtracting.

There is a pattern in which the difference increases each time.  The pattern rule changes for this type of pattern. You need three parts

1.     Start at
2.     The number you initially add or subtract from the first term to the second term.
3.     The number you increase or decrease by each time.

If there is a pattern involving shapes or pictures the students NEED to create a table.

If it is a repeating pattern you don’t need to find the difference or state the rule. You simply state the terms and circle the core.

They were so quiet today during math I had to share!

Have a good night!

Miss. Ross

Wednesday September 13th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

We started a new and fun way for me to get the class' attention. I say HOCUS POCUS and they say EVERYBODY FOCUS!!

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.
Morning meeting
Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for more information.
UOI: Today we talked about logo's and slogans! They did really well! We learned that a logo is a symbol that represents a brand. We did a worksheet in which they had to name as many logos as they can in a few minutes with a partner. I was so impressed they knew them all! We talked about the features of a logo. Next we learned that a slogan is a phrase that represents the brand. We did a similar activity in which they had to name as many slogans as they can in a few minutes with a partner then talked about the features of a slogan. They did really well! Finally we created a company together called "Field Fun". This company has all things soccer! We crated a logo that was a soccer ball in motion. We ran out of time before we could choose a slogan but they had some great ideas!

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
Math: So some of the children were very confused about the math last night so we took today to go over the concepts again. Here are the main sections that they are confused about.

Number pattern: Simply state the numbers in the pattern in order. For example: 3,6, 9,12, 15, etc

Pattern rule: This states how to recreate the pattern. For example: Start at 3 count on by 3

Position pattern: Always start with the first number in the pattern. Find the diagonal pattern. Now you need to figure out how you get from one number to the next number in the diagonal pattern. For example: How you get from 3 to the next number in the diagonal patter which is 12 "Start at 3 go 1 down 1 left". How you get from 6 to the next number in the diagonal pattern which is 15 you go one down and one left.

Pattern rule and position pattern are needed together. The pattern rule tells us to go every third box. Along with the position pattern we can complete the hundreds chart pattern easier. They must go together. You need the pattern rule in order to understand the position pattern.

We have gone through this step by step and they all understand it thoroughly. If you still have questions please let me know.

Since they worked so hard we had a dance party:)

Lunch/Recess

Language: Today we continued to talk about commas. We reviewed the situations where we use a comma together on the board. Next I gave each partner set a sentence and they had to figure out where the comma went and place a piece of elbow pasta where it should go. They had a lot of fun!

Have a good night!
