Wednesday November 8th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today!

Math: We started off talking about a strategy to multiply larger numbers. First we break down one of the bigger numbers in the multiplication sentence by finding two numbers that add together to make one of those numbers. Next multiply each number by the second number in the original multiplication sentence. Repeat for the second number that adds to the large number. Add together the products. This is your final answer. We did some questions together and then did some textbook work.

Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for more information.
War Memorabilia: We went to a presentation on artifacts from previous wars. They learned about what they went through, what they used and what they wore. Here are some pictures!

Language: Today we worked on writing instructions that we were having trouble with yesterday. We wrote out instructions together on how to make a salad. We realized we had a be specific and descriptive with our wording, include transition words and bossy verbs, number each sentence and include one step at a time. Here is what we did together.

Next we wrote instructions for how to put on a coat in partners. Here is some pictures of them trying to figure out the steps. They realized they kept missing steps as I showed them what they did! They had a lot of fun!

UOI: Today we had a two part UOI lesson. Our first lesson was on trading. In the pioneer times they did not have money to pay for items so they had to trade. So we practiced trading today. Each pair was given some cards that had different items on them: clothing, tools, pots and pans, medicine, lumber, fruits and vegetables and meat. We talked about how some items were more important than others so they were worth more points. They were trying to get the most points and items that would keep them alive. They learned that it wasn't easy to trade and sometimes people didn't want to trade with you so you had to find other methods. They had a lot of fun.

Our second lesson was on butter! They didn't have butter in containers from the store so today we were pioneers and saw how hard it was! We put some whipping cream in a mason jar and shook it for a long time! Then we ate some butter on crackers!

Here is the recipe of how we did it if you would like to do it as well: https://happyhooligans.ca/homemade-butter/

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we started working multiplying by 3's and 4's. We started by reviewing multiplying by 2's and 5's using circle up. We continued to play circle up with the 3's and 4's and while looking at the board to help them determine what number comes next. Next we did a worksheet and took up the answers.  When they were finished they tested each each other on their multiplications and practiced using a multiplication chart. Finally we took up the answers to the worksheet. Some people are still flipping the numbers. Remember...The number of groups X the number in each group.

I would suggest that you practice your multiplications at home. The best way to do this is flashcards. They can be printed off this website: http://www.timvandevall.com/math/free-printable-multiplication-flash-cards-for-kids/

Reading Buddies

Language: We continued reading our novel "The Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We read chapter 8 now! This chapter was long and about the Dance at Grandpas! We started working on the instructions we worked on yesterday but we are having trouble understanding how to write instructions. We are going to continue working on this in class.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
Language: Instead of UOI we working on paragraph writing as some of us forgot what this entails. We talked about how we need to include a topic sentence to introduce the paragraph, supporting details and a closing sentence. They wrote about their favourite vacation. We are going to continue working on this together as a class.

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we continued to talk about multiplication! We played a game to practice skip counting called Circle up! Each person said one number while counting up in twos and fives. If you are the one to say the number 50 then you are out. We did this several times and we had so much fun! Next we did some work in the textbook. Next we played Albert's insomnia! We did not beat our goal but we did fantastic! They are not adding three and four digit numbers to get our next number.

I would suggest that you practice your multiplications at home. The best way to do this is flashcards. They can be printed off this website: http://www.timvandevall.com/math/free-printable-multiplication-flash-cards-for-kids/

Spelling: I accidentally forgot the spelling books at home but I gave them the words and will give them time to finish it in class tomorrow. Sorry!!!
Here are the words:
smile

Language: Today we read chapter 7 called Sugar Snow.  It was about a extra cold spell that allows for farmers to tap more maple syrup. Next we looked at a part of the chapter that had instructions. They are taking the sentences and putting them into instruction form with bossy verbs, transition words, in a numbered list and has one instruction per line. We will be finishing this tomorrow.
