Monday January 16th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

International Day: Today we started researching on Italy! We used the tablets, our research from home as well as books to help us find out information on our topics. They had a lot of fun!

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Lunch/Recess

Math: Today we did money math centers! Here are the centers we did:

Station A: Wacky Word Problems
They had 6 money word problems in which they had to solve.
Station B: Money Muffin Tin Toss!
The students had muffin tins with amounts in each hole. They had to throw 3 counters and add up the amounts as they went. If they landed on a sad face then they lost all of their money.
Station C: Money Baseball
The leader called out an amount and they haddraw the amount against your partner on the white board! Whoever gets done faster, and is correct, wins!
Station D: Cup Count Challenge
The students were given four cups. They had to pour out the cup of change and count it! Next they needed to see how many different ways they could make the same amount using different coins and bills!
UOI: Today we started working on our summative! We went through everyone's topic and then they started researching, writing out their procedure, materials and explaining the forces related to their topic.

Healthy Snacks!

The Grade Ones will be turning their classrooms into grocery stores for our Organization unit. The students have been working really hard to stock it full of healthy snacks and drinks. On Tuesday Jan. 17th we will be opening our stores to SJA classes to purchase healthy snacks and drinks for $1-2. All proceeds will be donated to the Sick Kids Hospital.

Star of the Week

Last week's star of the week was Joshua! Great work Joshua!

Friday January 14th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did on Friday.

International Day: We started off the day learning about Italy! Our country for International day. We started off by watching a video about Italy. Next we learned to speak Italian using a youtube video! The children had a lot of fun and were really good at it! Here is some videos of them speaking in Italian!

After we learned to speak Italian we read some books and found more topics that we were interested in learning about. They are so curious about Italy!

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Lunch/Recess

UOI: Today we talked about fire trucks! We brainstormed all the different ways that a fire truck uses forces and motion. Finally we ended with a mechanical/chemical energy picture sort. Here is the amazing list the kids came up with:

  • Pull out the hose
  • Water coming out of the hose is a push force
  • Push the gas pedal down
  • Muscular force to lift the hose
  • Push the ladder up
  • The wheels have friction to stop
  • Gravity that keeps the fire truck on the ground
  • Chemical energy for the lights -- battery or engine
  • Fire truck is chemical energy
  • Ladder mechanical energy Mechanical energy
  • Steering wheel --muscular force
  • Horn is a push force
  • Speaker --chemical energy battery engine
  • Engine-- Chemical energy gasoline
  • Speaker has magnetic force
  • Doors--muscular force ,
  • Gear shift--push and pull force
  • Keys-- push and pull force

Math: Today we started working on money! We practiced converting money in cents to money in dollars (97 cents is $0.97). Next we did some work on our whiteboards answering questions and drawing coins. We ended the period learning how to round with money as we no longer use the penny. This is the rules that we follow. This was a confusing concept but it takes practice! When paying with cash at the store have your child figure out the coins to pay with. It is excellent practice!

Lunch/Recess

IB Binders: We updated our IB binders and sent term 1 work home.
Gym: Please see Mr. H's blog for more information.

Have a great night!

Thursday January 12th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: We had some trouble with the math yesterday so we did some extra math practice.
Language: Today we continued to work on inferencing and some students did their DRA's.
French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Lunch/Recess

UOI: Today we worked on chemical energy! Chemical energy is stored energy that releases a chemical reaction. It has a similar process as mechanical energy. It starts off with potential energy, then moves to chemical change and ends in work. We went through examples on the board and sorted pictures together on the board. Next the children thought of an example process as a group and drew and explained the process of chemical energy.

Math: Today we solved an elapsed time mystery here at St. Jude's!!! They had to read the story and understand each teacher's alibi,  understand the start and end time and calculate the elapsed time. The teacher that was not busy during the time of the crime was the kidnapper! They had SO much fun!!!

Lunch/Recess

Music: Please see Mr. Andrei's blog for more information.
Gym: Please see Mr. H's blog for more information.

Have a good night!

Wednesday January 11th

Hello,

I am so glad to be back! I missed everyone !

Here is what we did today.

Organizing: We put away some papers into our apple binders.
Language/UOI: Today we wrote goals for 2017! They had to write two memories from 2016 and something they were proud of of for 2016. For 2017 they had to discuss: three places they wanted to go, 2 things they were excited for, 1 goal for this year and 1 learner profile they want to work on. They are in the hallway for you to look at!
French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Lunch/Recess

UOI: Today we talked about Mechanical Energy. We talked about the process of mechanical energy starting with potential energy (Energy that is stored up and not moving), Kinetic energy (Anything that is in motion) and the final stage work (The task is completed). We sorted some pictures on the board together. Finally in groups they had to come up with a task that would fit with the mechanical energy process. They also presented them to the class. They are all the board in the classroom for you to see!

Next we reviewed the topics we have talked about so far and wrote definition for each one. We have made a word wall behind the door of our classroom!

Lunch/Recess

Math: Today we talked about elapsed time. We explained that a "mountain" was worth an hr, a "hill" Was worth 5 or 10 mins and a "rock" was worth a minute. We use a timeline to draw out the mountain, hill and rocks to determine how long it took to complete a task or a what time they finished a task on. It was a tricky concept but they are starting to get it!

Have a good night!
