UOI: Today we talked about fire trucks! We brainstormed all the different ways that a fire truck uses forces and motion. Finally we ended with a mechanical/chemical energy picture sort. Here is the amazing list the kids came up with:
- Pull out the hose
- Water coming out of the hose is a push
force
- Push the gas pedal down
- Muscular force to lift the hose
- Push the ladder up
- The wheels have friction to stop
- Gravity that keeps the fire truck on the
ground
- Chemical energy for the lights -- battery
or engine
- Fire truck is chemical energy
- Ladder mechanical energy Mechanical energy
- Steering wheel --muscular force
- Horn is a push force
- Speaker --chemical energy battery engine
- Engine-- Chemical energy gasoline
- Speaker has magnetic force
- Doors--muscular force ,
- Gear shift--push and pull force
- Keys-- push and pull force
Math: Today we started working on money! We practiced converting money in cents to money in dollars (97 cents is $0.97). Next we did some work on our whiteboards answering questions and drawing coins. We ended the period learning how to round with money as we no longer use the penny. This is the rules that we follow. This was a confusing concept but it takes practice! When paying with cash at the store have your child figure out the coins to pay with. It is excellent practice!
