Monday October 23rd 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we continued to work on estimating. They worked through some questions in which one side was estimating and then adding three digit numbers and then four digit numbers. Once they finished that they worked through some more questions that I felt they were having a hard time with. We are going to continue on review tomorrow.
Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for more information.
Spelling: Spelling test is due Thursday and the test is on Friday.
Language: We started talking about plural nouns

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr.B's blog for more information.
UOI: Today we finished off our unit by doing our unit self-reflection and our IB binders for this unit. When we finished we did a plural noun sheet from language.

French: Please see Mme. Stella's blog for more information.

Have a good night!

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we worked on three and four addition and subtraction. First we made posters that talked about the different words that mean addition and subtraction. We talked about how subtracting something is being taken away and with addition something is being added.

Another method to think about subtraction is through whole and parts. Subtraction always gives you the whole or the final answer and one part. It is your job to subtract in order to find the second part. This analogy helped them to answer some subtraction questions.

Here are some sheets to help your child if they are having trouble this weekend.

Reading Buddies: We did Reading buddies with Ms. Bancud's Class!

Spelling: The tests will be handed back on Monday.
Language: Today we continued to work on making inferences. We looked at some pictures on a powerpoint and made inferences based on those and some paragraphs. We are starting to understand inferences more often! Good work!
Lunch/Recess

Math: We continued to work on word problems. Next we worked on estimating in a subtraction question. It is the same method when estimating with addition except you subtract the numbers. Here are the strategies you can use.

UOI: We worked on our presentations today! I have videotaped their presentations. The videos are posted on youtube except they are a private video so no one can see except if you have the link. Here is who has presented so far.

Food Drive

Thursday October 19th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today reviewed three digit subtracting first. Next we continued with subtracting and practiced subtracting from a 4 digit number. The concepts are the same except the thousands column drops down to the answer. Today we did some examples on the board and then some questions in the textbook.

We need to make sure that if you borrow from a column you write it down and change the number as some people are making silly mistakes because of this.

Here is an example of what we did today:

Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for more information.
Language: Today we talked about inferencing. We learned that inferencing is when we are detectives and have to look for clues. Here are the steps:

First we did some role play in which some people came up to the board and read a scenario in which they had to answer a question such as : Who are they calling? Where are they going? They had a lot of fun! Next they did some inferencing cards in which each group had to read and answer the inferencing question together. They are starting to get it! This is a hard topic and takes a lot of practice.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
UOI: Today some people finished their analysis of another advertisement and the rest practiced for their presentation tomorrow:

They should make sure they say:

  1. What the name of your product?
  2. What features does your product have?
  3. What is the name of your company?
  4. What is the logo?
  5. What is the slogan?
  6. What Ad techniques did you use in your ad?
  7. What are the examples of each technique?
  8. What colours did you use and why?
  9. What is the message of your ad?

People doing videos have until MONDAY!

Wednesday October 18th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we learned about subtraction on 3 digit numbers! We did many examples on the board about borrowing numbers from our neighbour columns.

Step 1: Subtract the ones

Step Two: Next, we do the tens stripe...  Remember that the 3 is crossed out, so ignore it!  We can't do 2-5, so we'll need to borrow from the hundreds stripe!

Now, we can subtract the tens stripe... and the hundreds stripe:

Language: Today we worked on common noun and proper nouns! We learned that a common noun is general and a proper noun is specific and needs a capital letter. First we played proper noun tic tac toe where they each box had a common noun and they had to make it a proper noun in order to have that as their space. Next we did a worksheet and took up the answers. They did really well!

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information

UOI: Today we did the analyzing portion of the summative. First we went over the analysis they did previously and talked about where they went wrong. Next we moved onto analyzing our partners ad's. I think it went really well! Tomorrow we will be practicing for our presentation.

Tuesday October 17th 2017

Hello,

Here is what we did today.

Math: Today we talked about subtraction strategies we can use while doing mental math. The strategies we used were the same as addition but used differently.

1. Doubles: if 7+7 =14

We can switch around the numbers and use that knowledge differently. 14-7=7

2. Near Doubles

3. Make Ten

We did some examples together on the board and then did some textbook questions.

Music: Please see Mr. Oliver's blog for  more information
Language: Today we used our knowledge of summarizing to write our own summary. I read them the book "The three little pigs reimagined" and they wrote the somebody, wanted, but, so, then and the summary independently. They had time in class to work on it but if it was not done it is due on Thursday.

Lunch/Recess

Gym: Please see Mr. B's blog for more information.
UOI: Today we continued to work on our summative project. Everyone should be finished or almost finished their good copy of their project. We will begin analyzing our partner's ad tomorrow.
